Stunt Riding 101!
A flash profile on the fast-growing sport of stunt riding.
By Bryan Alesiano
The sport of stunt riding kicked off in the late 1970s when riders first started learning how to officially "wheelie" a motorcycle. The sport continued to build a loyal following for the next 20 years, attracting people of all ages worldwide. Then in the early 90s, a new form of stunt riding emerged, which involved a group of people performing a stunt together at one time. Today, group events are judged at all major contests, and this form of stunt riding is considered the most difficult event to master because all riders need to be in complete unison.
Though some refer to the sport of stunt riding as a high-intensity, heart pounding thrill ride performed only by insane individuals who live so fast they don't even have time to breathe, there's a lot more to it than that. Really, isn't "insanity" just a word thrown around by anyone not looking to understand a specific event, or take the time to truly appreciate something they might not be familiar with? Stunt riding is an affront to the rules of gravity, full of extreme tricks and eye-popping bike maneuvers. It is, in every form, genius - where the distance between insanity and genius is measured only by success. Hundreds of stunt riders compete worldwide each year in an attempt to Finish First® and become the best of the best in their class.
Much like success in bodybuilding and MMA, stunt riding involves heart, pride, extreme dedication and the guts to go after your dream, along with extensive training. All professional stunt riders need to have an amazing amount of energy and the endurance and mental focus of an F-1 fighter pilot, combined with a high level of physical conditioning. This is a big reason why BSN's energy and performance beverage ENDORUSH® and stunt riding go hand in hand.
Typical training for stunt riders lasts about 4-6 hours, seven days a week and requires each rider to perform at their peak physical and mental state to ensure the dangerous stunts are executed to exact precision. I'm sure many of you reading this have heard of the X-Games, or even the car drifting series. What you may not realize is that stunt riding has been announced as one of the largest growing motor sports to hit the streets in 2009! Be sure to keep eyes and ears open for an event in your area because these events are definitely something you won't want to miss out on!
