Round | Body Matrix Categories

Round body types have some softness to their bone structure. They appear curvy, rounded and circular throughout their figure. This is my guide for if you might be in the round category and how to dress for this feature

Features

Roundness appears in the bone structure. To be rounded means you have soft, round shapes in your frame. You might appear traditionally curvy or “hourglass”. have rounded shapes to your shoulders, chest and hips. You can be round or straight at any weight. These are some features to look out for:

  • rounded chest and hips

  • full chest and hips (for your proportions)

  • rounded shoulders

  • defined waist (but not always indented)

  • soft flesh at any weight (not hard or taut)

  • hourglass silhouette (but not necessarily)

How to Style

You don’t have to include ALL of the following elements in an outfit to honour your round shape, but one to three details will help to create this impression. There are also lots of other elements I could include, but I think this is a good starting point!

Waist definition

Defining the smallest point of your waist through a garment which is fitted to come inwards at the waist is the best way to highlight your rounded frame. Even if you don’t have a “small” or “indented” waist, if you have a rounded frame, waist definition will feel completely natural for you. You want to highlight the smallest point of your waist, which typically if you are rounded will be your mid-torso rather than under the bust or just above the hips. This can include a wrap dress, a belted waist, ruched waist and you might avoid an empire waist, dropped waist or obscured waist.

Soft fabrics

The main aim of the fabrics you put on your body is to echo the shapes of your body - to be an extension of the soft, round lines in your frame. You can do this in two ways: firstly, by wearing soft, floaty fabrics and secondly by wearing clingy fabrics which cling to your chest and hips. Avoid fabrics which are stiff, structured, and hard to mould around your curves. The fabrics you wear should be moveable.

Round shapes

Your outfit should be a collection of curved shapes. Whether its a round neckline, rounded sleeves, rounded trouser leg, rounded toes, round chest and hips, your outfit should be moving in a constant shape of curves rather than stiff, sharp lines.

Openness

Those with softness generally benefit from openness somewhere. This could be an open neckline, an open sleeve, open skirt, open leg - generally this helps to echo the shapes of the hourglass throughout the outfit, recreating that ‘in and out’ silhouette. Those with, say, narrowness need to then find a balance between open and narrow e.g. you might wear a halter neck which is close near the neck but open at the chest, or wear a tight, clingy top with a closed neckline so you are honouring the curve in a different way.
