Long | Body Matrix Categories

Long body types look tall and have length in their bone structure. They appear elongated as opposed to moderate or short. This is my guide for if you might be in the long category and how to dress for this feature

Features

Length takes into account your true height and your ‘vertical line’ - how tall you appear. To be long means you appear to be 5”7 or taller because of your body proportions. You can be long or short at any height; however, you are most likely to be long if you are above 5”7. These are some features to look out for:

  • small head in proportion to the rest of your frame

  • long upper leg

  • long limbs

  • 5”7+ in true height (but you can be shorter than this and be long)

  • looks tall

How to Style

You don’t have to include ALL of the following elements in an outfit to honour your long length, but one to three details will help to create this impression. There are also lots of other elements I could include, but I think this is a good starting point!

Maxi lengths

The most obvious way to honour your long vertical line is through extreme long lines. This includes maxi skirts, ankle-length coats, trousers which go beyond the ankle. In being long you have a more extreme length, which means really long lines feel cool on you because your body can take it. At a red carpet event for instance, those with long lines can make a statement by wearing a long train as it doesn’t drown them; it highlights how tall they are.

Oversized items

If you are long, oversized items are a great way to take advantage of your length. There is a caveat that you need to be aware of your width - those who are wide + long can go extra oversized and feel very effortless, but if you are narrow you might choose to be slightly oversized rather than go all the way. This could apply to your clothing, such as an oversized jumper, but fit could also apply to your accessories such as a large pair of earrings, a giant necklace or a large bag.

Unbroken lines

Creating a swooping line from head to toe is really impactful for those with long lines. This means avoiding an outfit which is split into sections, but feels long and unbroken. You can do this with the silhouette ensuring that the fabric doesn’t break (eg no crop tops), you can do it with pattern and colour too where there is no dramatic shift but one continuous flow

Extreme high/low waist

Typically, those with long lines look amazing when they highlight their length with an extreme waist line. This could be an extremely high or low waistline. You can wear other waistlines but these will create the biggest ‘wow’ moment as they enhance your extreme ‘long’ feature.
